Assistive Devices for children with Hearing loss

6 Nov

Children with hearing loss can benefit from the use of hearing aids and other assistive listening devices. These devices allow them access to sounds they would not otherwise hear, enabling them to hear environmental and speech sounds more clearly. The amount heard will depend on the level of hearing of each child- no two people with hearing loss will hear the same.

Use of assistive devices for hearing loss- What does WHO say?

"Assistive devices and technologies are those whose primary purpose is to maintain or improve an individual’s functioning and independence to facilitate participation and to enhance overall well-being."

Hearing aids are, FM systems and assistive listening devices to children with permanent sensorineural hearing loss or long-term conductive hearing loss are some of the assistive devices provided by FHO.

The process (standards FHO follows);

All children fitted with hearing aids are tested fully to ensure the type and degree of hearing loss prior to hearing devices being fitted. All children are fitted with custom made ear-moulds and individually programmed hearing aids. These devices are tested on the child to ensure that they are fitted to the prescribed amplification targets for their individual hearing loss. All children with hearing devices are regularly monitored for any changes in their hearing or hearing with the device.
