Personal Mobility

6 Nov

Personal mobility' is not only a human right in accordance with the UNCRPD, but is also critical because it provides a person with a disability the opportunity to access education and health facilities, to participate and more importantly to be included in activities within the family and the community. However, what many do not know or understand is that when a wheelchair does not meet, or it is not fitted in accordance with WHO minimum standards and guidelines by trained professionals, it can cause more harm to the individual and further advance the disability.

The WHO standards for servicing of mobility devices comprise of 8 steps starting from assessment to user training and follow up. We are proud to state that FHO has the only complete team of clinicians and technicians in Fiji with qualifications at an intermediate level and who also specialize in paediatric services.

Here we can see our team at their 3rd outreach for 2019. They set off on the 18th August for a week long programme which this time covered the Western division from Sigatoka all the way to Tavua, conducting maintenance, follow ups as well as attending to new assessments and fittings.
